History of Labradors

A little background on Labradors…

Labs originate from NewFoundland, most people assume that they originate from Labrador. NewFoundland means the new world is found. At first, NewFoundland was the whole American  continent. Now NewFoundland is a Canadian city near the gulf of Labrador. It is located in the East of Quebec near the Atlantic ocean.

Labradors are sporting dogs. Before the early 1800s, they would work long hours with fishermen to get food for the family. Imagine working with these cute dogs all day, swimming, and catching fish. Being fishermen and having  a companion like Labrador would be a pretty good life. Since they swam a lot they were healthy and exercised, like a sporting dog for example. At the end of the day, the St.John's water dogs would go home and play with the kids. Labradors are great with kids and anyone else. Sitting near a fire with your dog and eating fish must have been pretty nice.

Then, English men discovered the Labrador. They brought a few of them in Britain to sell. It was the perfect sporting dog for wealthy people. So they brought more and more until there were no longer any left. Imagine a whole breed being taken away from their homes and family, that is very shocking. Luckily, they have come back to us and now is our turn to take good care of them.

As you can see here is a map of New Canaan CT to New Foundland.

Quote from NikHil "The Lab not only makes a wonderful family pet, but is also an excellent hunter and swimmer. In fact, water is one of the Labrador's greatest love."
